Hows my little Cork Person?

In the past week I have worked (ahead) on more homework during daylight hours since I think elementry school. Wait, I take that back, because my mom would argue even in elementry school we had some late nights. Anyway, this is impressive for two reasons; I used to never do homework, and when I did it was literally last minute. Sadly the outlook for this week doesn't look very promising in letting up, that makes me sad. The work that I am doing though is making me happy, so it balances out.

In good news though i get to practice my sculpting skills once again and I will be creating little people out of wine corks (oh being an art student). With these little people I need to place them in some goofy situations, right now all I can think of is one climbing a tree, and making a 'boy and girl' cork person, um....do it. Which would be funny, to have cork people getting their freak on all over town. Anyway I need to photograph them for photo so it should be a good ol time walking around town doing that for an afternoon...if the sun ever comes out again.

Ok now that I've thought more about the cork people having sexy time, I'm liking it more and more, where would you think cork people bumping uglies would be funniest? Help me out here. HEART

Hows my little sheepish? Undid.

You might remember this post from a few months ago.

Well I took it back, I said screw it. I don't like it anymore, I quit.
Again.

What a nice day it is today. I'm off for a walk now, my weather thing is saying 70 degrees, thats flip flop and bike weather!!

Hows my little weekend getaway?

The photoshoot was a success, I have again proven that I am hot (to myself) Links/pictures will be available, Or just keep checking Here for the next few days. Anne It was good to see you, I'm happy you used my stuff.

Laura and I headed up the shore for a little bit of a cute 'lil getaway. She was feeling all left out that she didn't travel anywhere for Spring break so she took me up to Grand Marais for a good 'ol time. I really loved it up there, being away from Duluth, and being with Laura for the weekend was really great too!

We got up there and hiked around and skipped rocks where I used to back in the olden days, and took all sorts of cute pictures of ourselves, heres one:

The rest of the day was pretty mellow, went out for a really great dinner. Also saw some crazy thing on TV where naked people were eating food and sweets off of each other, that was pretty stellar.

This morning we woke up to some awesome fog, although it was technically 'warm' out on our adventure around the harbor we found ourselves pretty cold. So we grabbed some Sven and Ole's 'za and took off, leaving Grand Marais in our dust.

No trip up the North shore is complete without a stop at Betty's Pies! So we stopped I had some delicious Chocolate Banana Creme Pie, and Laura had a wonderful Butterfinger creme pie, I liked both, but hers better (just so you know).

All in all Grand Marais was a delightful trip, we relaxed, walked, ate, and had a really great time, I was sad it had to end. It was good to get out of Duluth for a bit and hang somewhere new(again). It would be better to hang out in the summertime, because more places are open (definitely a seasonal town) but this time is good too because then we can afford hotels!

Hows my little Newly Digital?

I was sitting in on a class a few weeks ago that I sit in on somewhat regularly and the teacher presented the class with a statement I could not ignore.

"Paper is obsolete"

Bam. Just like that, he killed paper.

I consider myself a nerd so I sort of believed him because of a new invention thats on its way out. Its called E Ink or E Paper, and its out to kill paper, some of the uses that they have lined up for it are in newspapers, books, pamphlets, and other cheap yet mass produced paper products used for reading.

Sony is working on releasing this little guy, called 'Sony E reader' Its nice looking I think I could read a whole book with it. (A black and white picture book that is)

Looks pretty nice eh? Technology is really great. Now back to that statement from before, Paper is dead. (more or less)

How often have any of you done research in actual books this year, not including your assigned text book. Me, I haven't cracked a book to do substantial research in college yet. I read all the PDFs my teachers have scanned into the library. Usually I will just search the online library database for what I need to look up. Then again we cant forget our trusty friend:

I get a lot of information here now too:

One argument I heard was, "But to open up a new book...the smell." This is a good point, People, nay, I, love opening up a new book and smelling it. People just feel comfortable with them.
The rebuttal, "Its because You grew up with books and that is all you know."

This is so true. I as well as most of you grew up with access to quick information, the internet, or TV. How about when your phone no longer needed a cord, we were free to roam the house and talk with our next door neighbors! We could also sit on the couch and order a pizza without moving! Fantastic. Now imagine being able to buy that book you've been wanting online and download it right to your reader, instantly. Just like the pizza, you didn't hardly have to even shop for the new book, you just have it.

Your next argument might be, but I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTEE (maybe even loathe) reading things for a long time on a computer screen, lord knows I do. So lets put your typical LCD display next to the E reader. (sorry about the size comparison here)

I know its a small display, but its pretty much the same thing. The super high contrast of E ink makes reading painless, even possible in daylight! The battery lasts for a whopping 7,500 page turns, so unless you're reading war and peace, you're set.

What about pictures in my books?

This is still new, so wait a few months for this to hit the shelves. Either way, its coming.

Now you might be just coming up with an excuse about how paper is going to stay alive, now on my walk home, I did the same thing. realistically paper won't die, but it could become an endangered specie.

Billboard and advertisements:
Replaced digitally, not popularly yet but the traditional ones we know are on their way out.

Japan knows whats up, or are they cheating, how about closer to home.

Times Square New York, and yes I do see the big traditional billboard, but look at all the others!

Business cards are transferred on Blackberrys and Treos. Signs in front of hotels are turning to LED displays. There are many more too! If its not back-lit any more its almost not worth looking at or too boring. Its true. You know it just like me.

There is only one industry not about to loose any of its paper production to binary code though:

In our generation paper is going to be stuck with us like the bad habit we all know that. Our kids on the other had, who knows what they are going to grow up with! I know in elementary school we used to say we would use our watches to talk to our parents on the phone, maybe we haven't gotten that far, but I was on top of a mountain last week and called my sister in Minnesota. Technology is changing, and its changing our lives. So maybe paper is not dead, but it is definitely on its way to be used less. Anyone heard of universities going completely digital with their textbooks yet, because I have.

What do you think? Is paper on its way out the door? What paper things are sticking around for the long haul? Let me know what you think.

Hows my little Summit?

In a mad case of insomnia I have decided to blog about my adventure to Colorado.

It began kind of shaky because I was still not feeling all that great, my stomach was grumpy at me and it was very smelly and uncomfortable because of it. My plane rides were uneventful minus my crazy stomach pain.

I landed in Denver about 5 minutes before Jon we met up at baggage claim, and waited for the better part of two hours for all of my bags, it was really lame. Tired and hungry Rich's (my host) Sister Kristen picked up Jon and I and we headed to Rich's place in Frisco.

The rest will be more brief I promise:

Day one was the best day of skiing, although we got settled in pretty late and the time change was that evening as well we decided to wake up after an adjusted 4 hours of sleep to make first tracks in the new snow that the heavens unleashed.

We spent most of this day skiing the back bowl of Copper mountain, I was in love with the powder but my ski parter Jon was not quite as happy about it, so it was a mix of groomers and powder all day, still, very good skiing.

Day two Jon and I explored more of the mountain, the snow was less good so we slept in.
Day three we got to ski with rich which was really fun, he took us to a run known as hard to find, for good reason, its hard to find because you have to be crazy to try to find it. we skied the trees for a good 20 min before we found the run, but the snow was really delightful and the crazy steep run we sought after was short but really great, and a little scary.

It was this day I was beginning to question how good of a skier I was because I was having lots of trouble skiing in the bumps in control as well as in the trees. But to my credit, most of the runs with bumps were either on blacks or double blacks, and the tree runs were unnamed or unrated runs.

Wednesday was the only day off we took from skiing, it was a pretty relaxing day, we went to a nearby state forest and hiked around in some deep snow and took some pretty pictures as well.

Thursday was uneventful in skiing-ness, and the evening was quiet as well.

Friday we slept in and met up with Kristen and a few of her pals on the mountain which was fun. That night we went over to Rich's neighbor's house for some good food and drink, good times were had by all.

Friday night I got a call from northwest telling me that My flight was moved from 11:30 AM to 7:30 AM. This call came the night before I was to leave, LAME LAME LAAAAME. I got my flight fixed to a normal time (4:30) and then drank some more in frustration. Good luck was on my side and Ali (rich's GF) hooked me up with another free day of skiing and herself as a buddy to go with for the next morning to kill time.

That was very wonderful.

Altogether I had a a really great time, it was really fantastic to spend some time with Rich and see his new life in Frisco, Colorado, and to meet his lovely lady (keep her around Rich) and his cute yet sometimes very mean kitty. I will definitely be adventuring out to visit him again in the future, I think next time I am going to try for a summer excursion, I guess there is more to do then. IE camping, climbing, hiking and other outdoorsy things too. I recommend Copper mountain for skiing to anyone and everyone, its big enough to feed the needs of a skier and boarder of any caliber. And it was good.

Jon Me Rich

In the mean time, I want to get the heck out of Duluth, this next year won't go fast enough. no hard feelings D-town, but I've had my fill of ya for now.

How my little Colorado Rocky?

Tonight I am going to Colorado to visit my good pal Rich, and meet up with yet another good pal Jon. I am really pumped for this getaway, we will be skiing the crap out of Copper mountain and possibly a couple others. There is a good chance of a super sweet backcountry hike for one of our days and that is going to be no less than stellar too! All in all, I can't wait to do some mountain skiing, Today i hit the big jumps at spirit to get all amped for this adventure. I have a big 'ol mark on my back from one of my less than successful attempts, but oh well!

Yesterday I skied the pipe at spirit because it was the only decent run, so hiking around on it was sweet because I got to watch a guy work out a really sweet rodeo 5 and it was cool to see someone do a big trick in real life.

And thats it, I feel better, my stomach still working some kinks out but overall, much better. If I get my camera to work maybe you'll see a post for me

Hows my little lingering stomach pain?

I've been sick.
Back this summer i spent nearly two days in the hospital feeling sick in all sorts of ways, so I paid real close attention to my body and the different aches and pains assoiated to my body. I sat around wondering when I would feel normal again, because I forgot what 'normal' was.

Yesterday i actually felt exactly when my body left it's normal feeling and swung into sick feeling, it happened approximately around 9:40am. The familiar aches in my back, when the bones of your fingers feel like they are buzzing, and something about how your eyes feel like they are pressing against your skull. In this case I cant forget my stomach, dangnabbit my stomach, it feels like VanGouh is using my innards to paint starry night onto my ribs.
[spellcheck didn't catch dangnabbit, amazing!]

Being sick is bizzarre, i can still do all of my daily functions, such as walking, talking, graphically designing, and even socializing. But i can't do one particular, a fairly important one, and that is eat. Absolutley nothing sounds like it will stay in my stomach, over the course of these past two days I have had two sandwiches and two bowls of cereal. The second bowl of cereal was eaten this morning when my body played a mean trick on itself and said it was feeling great, damn you trickster body. But since I have landed back school today I have spiraled back down to my said sick feeling.

Wish me luck I hope to be over this by saturday.

Hows my little blizzard?

God, thank you for giving me all of the snow I requested months ago.
Its about damn time.

Today here in Duluth Rock City we began it in a blizzard warning that started yesterday evening, and goes until tomorrow night. which is kind of serious. I woke up today to check my E-mail before I even got out of bed to see if class was canceled, sure enough it was. Sarah and I made a wonderful breakfast, and with the company of our lovely roomie Halie we ventured down to the lake to play in the wind, snow, and ice.

I got to accomplish one of my Duluthian goals which was to sled down a street, along the way. I wasn't ready for what I was in for down at the lake though. The wind here is blowing quite hard, something around 40-60 MPH and with some snow mixed into it each flake is a little dagger of snow pain. Down on the ice was so windy we were able to just stand on the ice and the wind would push us across it, it was SWEET!!!

After we blew around on the ice for a while we called it quits and went home, we were tired snowy and our faces were freezing while our bodies sweat. Now its thundering and lightning outside and i didn't even know that was possible.

AND

School is already canceled for tomorrow. Not that I have Friday class anyway, but since I'm snowed in, Laura is, and every one else and their mother is as well, the roomies and I are going to tip back one or two gin and tonics and probably get our Dance Dance Revolution, hot damn. Should be a good night.

Tomorrow I am going to adventure into the snowy world to laura's house, cause I am imagining her unable to get to work alive, and it will be a fun jaunt. Yay!
