Laura and I recently acquired a new knife for our kitchening needs and HOLY CRAP!
It was like we were living in the dark ages of cutting, I sliced a green pepper with absolutely no sawing motions, not even the slightest!
I hereby recommend one nice knife to everyone who slices and chops. Your slicing life will improve greatly.

Ahhh! I've got a great set of serrated knifes, but I've been wanting a really nice, non-serrated blade for chopping because we cook so much! I might have to do some shopping soon, as I know it would make a huge difference.
We got an awesome bread knife to replace the dollar store bread knife we'd been using. It was revolutionary. I use it for more than just bread because it's that good.
Knife sharpeners are just as fun for Andy. Sharpen up a dull knife and it's just like new!
